Currently, it is easy to transmit an 'on' or 'off' Redstone signal. Vertically, it can be done with observers or Redstone torches, and horizontally it can be done with Redstone wires and repeaters.
However, it is a lot more difficult to transmit a specific Redstone signal strength over a long distance. In order to preserve this signal strength, you need to use comparators. Horizontally, this means making a long comparator chain, and vertically this is even more difficult.
If there was an easier way to transmit specific Redstone signals over long distances — both horizontally and vertically — it would open up more possibilities for Redstone contraptions with more than just an 'on' and 'off' state.
