Allays in Minecraft are a niche feature. Only a few of us have actually used them, they are forgotten. I propose a mechanic that will change that.
My proposal is that when allays are not holding an item, they will be able to pick up anything. They would then return it to the player who last gave them an item or a note block nearby. This is a clear upgrade to the allay and would increase the amount of use cases for this mob drastically. When paired with the new copper golem, the opportunities increase tenfold. Say you are mining, your allay gathers up the dropped items, zips back to a note block and then the copper golem sorts those items into chests. Perfect.
The original core mechanic of the allay would be preserved, being able to filter out what items are retrieved would still have its place within farms. What we are talking about is just increasing the versatility of this mob.
This change would really help with creating automation that functions in an organic and whimsical way. This change could see allays zipping around your base once again, more useful than a little decoration.
