In late march of 2024, the method of obtaining the Bad Omen effect was changed from simply being applied to the player upon killing a Pillager Captain to instead that the Pillager Captain drops a potion which gives Bad Omen when consumed. People quickly raised concerns as while it is mechanically a super great change it is morally a dubious one as now the player is inexcusably responsible for the harm that comes to villagers during raids. So I propose a middle ground: instead of dropping a bottle upon death, a Pillager Captain's death now summons a Vex like entity carrying an Ominous bottle. The Bearer slowly circles the player, just out of reach of melee attacks. If the player kills the Bearer, it throws an Ominous bottle onto them and they get the Bad Omen effect. If the player is able to kill the Carrier without being directly credited for its death, such as with lava or dispensers, it will die without giving the player any effects or dropping anything. The Bearer will stay around the player indefinitely, growing stronger as more Captains are killed. It will automatically make the player's village popularity drop to 0, or whatever it is when they first make the world.
This idea came to me before I knew about Ominous bottles coming out of Trial Spawners, so it doesn't take them into account, but I think it works even then.
