They could be crafted with 1 hopper, 6 copper, and 2 black dye. you would place the pipe down and it would have an arrow pointing in which direction the items would flow you could attach it to a chest Hopper or anything that can contain items and then it will suck the items out like a hopper and push them the way the arrows are pointing into either another container or another pipe you can place other pipes to Branch off from the pipes and it will evenly split out the items and if there's not an even amount it will put more into the first one or if there's less than the needed amount it will only give stuff to the first couple. If you craft a pipe with an observer you can get a separator pipe separator pipes work like normal pipes but they have little red dots going on them and you can set them to allow different items to be sucked up and other items to not be these pipes would suck all of that item out of the items going through the pipes but letting any item that isn't chosen to flow through normally. This could be really helpful with storage, smelting, cooking, and farms as well as it would make builds look better when they're trying to go with a steampunk theme because of the new copper blocks.
