In our boring real world calcite is mechanically soft (it's easy to scratch) but it is chemically unstable when soaked with a slightly acidic solution like rainwater due to its calcium carbonate.
However, I think in Minecraft this could open up some very interesting mechanics and builds if the calcite were to dissolve in rain, as although many blocks interact with water, I cannot name one that works solely with rain.
