Critical hits make sense to do more damage because there is more force behind the attack. The attack will have more power because there is more momentum behind it.
I think that getting a critical hit while falling should do more damage based on how far the player fell. For example, if the player falls 1 block, the attack should be 50% stronger (this is the amount of damage for crits as of right now). However, if the player falls 10 blocks, the attack should be 50% stronger as normal, plus 5 extra damage (I calculated the extra damage to be [fall distance / 2]).
This would add lots more strategy to fighting in Minecraft. It would make players want the high ground, so that they do extra damage.
Some more specifics:
- Damage cap of 20 (sounds like a lot, but falling 40 blocks and surviving is hard!)
- Does not work with slow falling
- Works with feather falling, but is less effective with higher levels (5% less, with 5% more per level, up to 30% less damage with FF IV)
