Potential upgraded compass or compass block??

I'm quite sure we all know the compass item, it points to the world spawn or (if linked to a lodestone) points to a lodestone. But what if you are underneath that thing you are trying to get to but you don't know if this thing is above you or below you, what where my idea comes in. What if there was an upgraded compass or compass block that instead of being a 2d model its a 3d one with the needle rotating on a 3d axis so you could always know the direction of where you are going whether you're below ground or above ground flying with an elytra.
