I would assume in part because they've already announced adding Ostriches and Vultures in future updates to the Savanna and Badlands biomes.... or maybe Mojang just wants more birds in general. :3

Please include Swifts. They fly pretty high in the sky and their wings are curved backwards and are small. They would make great ambiance

I suggested cormorants/shags a wee while ago and it seems to have "mysteriously" disappeared.

I think if they added more birds (which they 100% should) cormorants would be a great addition, because in China they have tame Great Cormorants that they use to help in fishing.  Would be a new way to fish in Minecraft.  They would collect more items then a fishing rod, but will be slower which evens it out.

Birds just add so much life into the world in general though, would love to see some NZ representation with a Kiwi or something.

Imagine rowing across the ocean and you see a flock of gannets diving into the water and catching fish as they swim underneath your boat.

Even just some pigeons would make me happy, birds are just the best really.

I would really like Ravens and crows. They’re really smart and could collect things and bring them back to you. Even sit on your shoulder. Hummingbirds would be awesome too.

I think hummingbirds and owls are the most "Minecraft-feeling" of the bird options that would round out what we currently have.

However, hummingbirds seeking out nectar and flowers perhaps has too much overlap with the bee, making them not a very unique mob. I would love them as an ambient mob, like an above-ground equivalent of the bat, but can't see them having a real in-game use other than perhaps dropping (coloured?) feathers.

Owls are perhaps a little too similar to the vulture that's already been announced - even down to them suiting a dropped-item-scavenging mechanic. I think they'd work really well in Minecraft's artstyle but can't think of a unique mechanic for them.

I've had a huge soft spot for ducks ever since playing with Mo' Creatures in 2011. I'd love to hear a quacking mallard in my world, even if it's essentially just a retextured swamp chicken.

Well yeah Parrots already exist, I won't have a problem if there's no birds but it doesn't hurt to have them. It just lights up the nature more and makes it look even more alive.

Perhaps they could do it like they did with tropical fish, tons of different random variations of color, shape, and so on. They wouldn't need much use maybe tameable? like parrots? Dropping feathers. More atmosphere to the game. :)

they should also add Egyptian geese in desert biomes near a river or desert temple. Egyptian geese are aggressive and passive and you can feed them seeds to breed.

Barnacle Geese would actually be a good addition to the caves and cliffs updates as they nest on mountains and cliffs.

And there should be an achievement when you tame all types of birds

like just imagine seeing a flock of birds flying by and then you take out your bow and arrow and shoot one down and get a little bit of meat and they’d also look really pretty

as another commenter mentioned Ducks in particular would be really neat, especially since they'd be one of the few 'aquatic' mobs to only swim along the surface primarily - only ducking down to scavenge for fish, they'd make a great addition to rivers and lakes

Im a huge harry potter fan, and im just imagining how awesome it would be to be able to have pet owls and even as a easter egg when the new fantastic beast movie comes out, having the ability to send "post" or allow for owls to carry items would be so awesome. The sky definitly needs some new content and introducing different breeds of birds, each with a purpose in the game other then just filling the skys would be wonderful.

There are so many different birds to choose from in the real world so we have plenty of choices. This would also give more life to the forests from the occasional pig, sheep, cow, and chicken you'd find roaming around. It also gives us more animals with the ability of flight which is currently only gifted to the dragon, phantom, vex, ghast, wither, and parrot.  So if this could become a feature in a future update that would be fantastic to see!

The game could definitely benefit from more ambient mobs, we've had the bat from a long time and even though its pretty much useless, it adds a lot of ambience to caves, birds could do the same for forests.

The game currently feels very dead and lifeless. After playing with some mods that add bird sounds to forests, I can confirm that this would make a MASSIVE difference to the atmospherics of the game. It makes the game feel vastly more alive and immersive. Out of all the mobs they've introduced recently, it's frankly surprising that birds are not one of them.

If added, their sound should work similarly to ghasts - where you can hear them from a distance.

since parrots exist in the jungle, it would be fair to add birds in minecraft

Movement in the sky and the sounds of birds would go a long way to adding immersion to the game! Especially if there were different kinds of birds for different biomes (seagulls over ocean) and times of day (owls at night). I love hummingbirds, and it would be cool to be able to feed them honey I harvest from my bees.

Yes, I think humming birds would be nice to see. Also I think it would be nice to see water birds or birds that have to do with water like pelicans, herons, ducks, ospreys, kingfishers and flamingos.

i think if they add these then they will be like fish or cats that it is 1 spawn egg with many skins, because for mojang adding 20 bird spawn eggs separately is like adding 200 fish spawn eggs for different designs.

If Mojang did some sort of Biome vote for the forest biome or just add it into a Biome update update. this would be the mob, there could be birds nests and birds could be somewhat useful if they had some behavior with other animals which could help you, or maybe even try to make it a pet which is a repeated thing for all mobs that are pets irl.
