Some ideas for new smithing table functionality:
1: Combine any helmet with a chainmail helmet to create a helmet with a chainmail neck guard. The same functionality applies to chestplates- this gives chainmail a new functionality/use (since it's kinda useless tbh). Doing this would increase the armor's protection by a small amount (1/2 an armor point?)
2: Gilding armor- this has been mentioned before, I believe, but if you use a smithing table to combine a gold ingot with a piece of armor, it adds golden decoration (A crown-like thing for the helmet, a fancy crest for the chestplate, and idk what design for the leggings and boots. Gilding armor keeps piglins from aggro-ing on you, without increasing/decreasing your armor's protectiveness.
3: Obsidian encasing. Smelt a piece of obsidian in a blast furnace, with a bucket of lava, and you get molten obsidian. Combine the obsidian with a piece of armor on the smithing table, and it increases the armor's protection for a short time (Obsidian is really fragile, so the casing has a low durability, but the armor itself is intact when encased.)
4. Pearlescence. Use a bottle on a shulker and you get a bottle of Shulker Mucus (Liquid Ender Pearl). You can then slather this on your armor for protection from some End-related hazard (Endermen don't aggro you? Your armor will teleport out of the void? You get a slight Levitation effect?) This has a lot of potential to become the next tier above Netherite...
