The sole purpose of this is to try and prevent losing them to friendly fire, I find the combination of them often being in extremely close proximity to the player and their low health makes them far more prone to such unfortunate fates than the other pets. Having them attempt to flutter away from the action and out of harm's way should hopefully serve to help remedy this problem and make the cute little guys less of a liability on your adventures. Putting the parrot on sit would of course prevent this both so you don't scatter them by running through your home blade drawn and so you can still hit them with your weapon deliberately should you want to for some reason.
