Axolotls are a brand-new mob introduced in Caves & Cliffs Part I! As adorable as they are aggressive, players can look forward to plenty of fun features when they find what some call the "walking fish": 

  • Spawning - axolotls will spawn underground, in water
  • Tempting & Breeding - Holding a tropical fish or a bucket of tropical fish can be used to tempt axolotls or to mate them. 
  • Attacking - axolotls will attack fish, squid, drowned, and guardians.
  • Colours - axolotls come in a variety of colours, with blue axolotls having a small chance of spawning as a mutation when breeding 2 axolotls.
  • Drying Out - axolotls can survive on dry land for a few minutes. After that, they will start to dry out and take continuous damage until rehydrated.
  • Playing Dead - when taking damage, there is a chance that the axolotl will play dead. While playing dead, the axolotl will regenerate health and mobs will be unable to target them.
  • Combat Regeneration - When a player kills a mob that the axolotl was attacking, they are rewarded with the regeneration effect and their mining fatigue is removed if they have it.
  • Bucketing - axolotls can be picked up and carried around in buckets just like other fish!

    i so far LOVE the addatoin of axlolotls BUT there is 2 issues the axolotles need to be able to grow there coral like in real life and they need to be tameable petable and they need to be able to be on land and kill land creatures and YAWN

    We can all agree, axolotls are the cutest things in the world. Theyre now my favourite mob in the came (even before cats!) and they really help with hostile underwater mobs like the drowned. My favourite colour has to be the Lucy (pink) axolotl! Also, the play dead feature is hilarious 😂

    I don't know if someone else has mentioned this but axolotls actually have a third stage of their life cycle which they normally never reach because the metamorphosis requires a certain level of iodine which isn't present in their environment so they stay in their juvenile aquatic form forever.

    I personally think it would be neat to reference this by including an unused terrestrial axolotl in the game's code that could be summoned by commands as a nod to one of nature's real-life unused assets.

    (While the metamorphosis can sometimes be triggered if one axolotl eats another because they concentrate iodine in their bodies, feeding an axolotl a bucket of its brethren to turn it into your personal war lizard may not be the message Mojang is trying to send, however cool it may be.)

    I found a pool of axolotl near my house but one day the axolotl disappeared before that I put a fence around the pool, so IDK where they went! I think they despawned but I'm not sure.

    They are cool, I like them alot in the game. I wish they were easier to find though.

    Axolotls should be edible to increase realism, as they are a delicious dish served in fancy Japanese restaurants.

    I love the axolotl, It is one of THE most cute animals added on the game ever. I think that it can be just as Iconic as the creeper. My sister started playing the game just because of it. I think Mojang has done a great job of making us aware that it is endangered. Thank you MOJANG!!!!

    I want to build an axolotl army  and u should do the cooooooolest thing. An axolotl king in the mangrove, ocean or ice biome and create a dragons+++ for free

    A thing ive noticed with axolotl is, if they spawn in the same body of water as tropical fish, theres gonna be a bunch of bone meal and tropical fish youre going to have to clean up if your base is nearby

    i suggest that axolotl can pick up tropical fish like foxes can pick up items, and they eat them over time, maybe granting a regeneration effect?

    its quite annoying coming back to your base to see tons of tropical fish and bonemeal in the pond you built

    Maybe there should be a hunger system for player-fed axolotls so they don't commit genocide to the existing populations of tropical fish
