The Current Minecarts are a little bland. Here are my thoughts (As well has wonderful commentors) on how to fix the issues.
1. Have the option to build 2 block turns. IDK how this would be designated. Perhaps you but regular rail in the crafting table and you get half a turn rail.
2. Adding on to minecarts. More workbenches in minecarts would help, as well as adding lanturns onto them for portable Light.
3. Connecting minecarts with chains. Pretty straight forward but is a nessesity.
4. Portal Rail. Portal rail starts out empty, but you can place an ender pearl on two portal tracks to connect them. When run over, the minecart would teleport to the other track with the same direction and momentum.
5. Sticky rails. Sticky rails slow a minecart down slightly, without doing it toom much. (unpowered rails job there)
6. Floating rails. Combine a lily pad with a rail to get a floating rail. Floating rail can be placed over water and can allow for some cool tracks.
7. Gripped rail versions are just all of these versions (minus the floating rail) but with rooted dirt attached to them, allowing for wall and cieling placements. BUT those require a lot of speed and momentum for the minecart to traverse.
Finely, I am done. Minecarts are a useful tool but need some work to make them more than a decoration item.
