Gravel is a very abundant block that isn’t useful other than for finding flint. One way it could be used that mirrors the real world is by making a ‘path’ on ice which will counteract the slippyness. This means you can make a path through snow biomes, which will also help keep your sense of direction.
This would work similar to drawing a path with a shovel on dirt blocks:
If you have gravel in your inventory, and use a shovel on ice (or snow?), it automatically places flat gravel
It could also prevent snow from stacking on top of it, so you always have a clear path. This would be helpful with the cliffs update, but the gravel would not protect you from powdered snow (it can be placed, but would still fall when you step on it).
