Variable command

I always wanted to make my own minecraft games with command blocks, but not having variables makes that impossible. I'd like it if you could use a command a bit like the scoreboard command, where you can add, subtract and change values of specific variables, including getting the value of a variable in a separate command. For example:

/variable set 'animal' to 'pig'

/summon [var=animal]

That example would summon a pig.

    I don't think Minecraft will add this.

    However, for integer or float variables, you could use the scoreboard command, like this.

    #Adds the scoreboard objective
    scoreboard objectives add variable dummy

    #Tells it about an un-existing player, and adds 1 to it's score
    scoreboard players add example variable 1
