Minecraft currently has very few underground structures, mostly mineshafts. "Dungeons" are way too small to be considered proper dungeons in Minecraft for adventure. This game REALLY needs big dungeons for adventure, challenge, and loot!
That's where the lost cities come in. It's a generated structure found underground, an abandoned city made out of deepslate materials, built inside a large cave. They have plenty of cobwebs, and some candles still remain to illuminate the city. It'll be a maze of buildings with valuable loot to find, and challenges like the Warden. And perhaps, this'll be a good time to add Illusioners and better-equipped mobs (like zombies wearing full iron with sword/shield) in this structure. It's a welcome challenge, and can be easily avoided by new players.
The idea of dead underground cities is a very popular one in the community, and I really hope Minecraft will add them! They have a really nice spooky vibe that fit well in Minecraft. We need more big structures to explore, and challenging fights. Veteran players don't have anything else to do but to build and build, which can get boring.
