The idea of cracks is good, however it would suck to die from it when you least expect it.
Whilst exploring on a heavily modded world gen I encountered something very similar to cracks but they were by the ocean and all had water at the bottom. Falling down them is enough of a jump scare and then you have to dig your way back to the top.
But then if the crack did not open up into a cave and the player had no tools then it would doubley suck. SO, if the cracks only generated over aquifers and always led down to them it would solve both these problems at once. Plunging the player unexpectedly into a deep cave, perhaps to their doom if ill prepared.
Either way I think it would be the most fun way to have cracks in the world gen.
