Known as random threats for caves, i just got an idea of a huge update for them, making them more than those random threats and somewhat underpowered guardians for the end portal.
When left alone, in specific conditions, they might grow into their adult stage: silvermoths. Since silverfishes reminds a fluffy moth caterpillar for me. The silvermoths are exacly giant moths keeping an appearence similar to silverfishes, however unlike silverfishes they're completely pacific, they will fly around, scared of sunlight but attracted to most light sources, when breed they start infecting stone blocks, and produce silverstring sticked to blocks and wrapped in a large amount around fences and chains. silvermoths can also spawn naturally in lush caves, maybe they could be riden too, being able to fly for a limited time and will immediatelly unmount the player once in contact with sunlight to flee to a dark place
Silver string as mentioned before can be harvested, but only with a scissor, it can be placed like a sturdier string, used to craft a damaging cobweb like block, crafted into a net to capture small mobs and used to craft silver bar, that along gold and copper bars can be crafted into silva alloy that can be used for gear with a similar toughness to iron and a special effect, silver strings can also be generated naturally near pockets of infected stone, but touching or breaking any has a chance to trigger nearby infected blocks
