Currently players are severely punished with losing their items when they die, just from items despawning alone. Items don’t despawn in unloaded chunks but 5 minutes is still nowhere near enough time to collect your items, whether they be high, underground, or next to lava. Even at endgame, there’s not much to protect your items from being destroyed on death. & with archeology coming, there’s a partial solution for mid-endgame: The Totem of Tombs. It’s a new totem that can be dug up rarely at most dig sites, but is much more common the deeper underground a dig site is, & a somewhat common deep dark treasure. If you have 1 in your inventory when you die, it would spawn a tomb on your death point (or any air or water block nearby if you suffocated) containing all your items, except for the tomb totem used; that 1 would be broken & appear in your inventory when you respawn, showing the coordinates of your tomb & saying how you died. Players would then be able to get all their items safely & more easily, but it’s balanced because you still have to travel back prepared. You can also rename a used totem on an anvil, maybe about the event so you don’t forget it or get confused with multiple broken totems you have. This would also allow you to keep a record of your deaths so you could compare with other players. This also would be interesting for your own lore in the world. You should also be able to get normal tombs for storage in archeology.
