Let's use the golden carrot as the primary example -- The golden carrot was also added to the game as a brewing ingredient, and it's also crafted by surrounding the food item with 8 gold nuggets in a crafting grid. Yet the golden carrot is edible and the glistering melon slice is not. In fact, I played the game for years without knowing the golden carrot could be eaten, because I knew the glistering melon slice could not and assumed that the golden carrot worked the same way.

Another example is the golden apple. Although the golden apple isn't a brewing ingredient and it's crafted with gold ingots instead of nuggets, it's another "golden" food type that is edible -- and in past versions of the game it was crafted with nuggets the same as golden carrots and glistering melon slices.
