I've seen a few takes on how a hammer should be implemented into the game but here is mine.
The idea behind introducing a hammer is to provide more variety and give more choice within the combat system.
Crafting recipe would be a T shape of 3 sticks down the middle column, with a, for example, iron ingot in the top left and top right. Can be made out of Iron, Gold, Diamond, or Netherite. No wood or stone tier as I think it would be too strong of an item that early on.
The hammer would deal less damage than a sword of equal tier and swing slower, but in return would provide AOE damage and knockback. The range would be a 2x3 grid in front of the player.
I want a sword/hammer to both be the right choice depending on the situation you're in and personal preference.
Unique enchantments to a hammer could be
- Ground Pound- increasing the range of the hammer's aoe attack
- Shockwave- adding a short stun to mobs hit by the hammer
