one possible way to help with the inventory problem is to replace block variants with block states. for example, deepslate ores could just be a connected texture; if you place an ore block on any type of deepslate including other ores, it appears as a deepslate ore. Azalea bushes and saplings could be all one block as well; a regular azalea bush is a sapling that doesn't grow without bonemeal. bonemealing an azalea bush would cause flowers to grow as a second growth stage. breaking a flowering azalea bush without the use of shears would yield a regular bush. further bonemealing a flowering bush would grow it into a full tree. Using shears on either type of bush would turn it into a dead bush an would yield it's corresponding leaf type.
each block state would be monitored in the debug window, and could be changed with the debug stick.
