Mine shafts have a very rare chance to come not abandoned. There could be chests of equipment, villagers or new miner mobs down there, and maybe even new items such as a new lantern type that will emit light of you carry it, but it can't be in your off hand and once it is turned on it can't be turned off and loses durability over time.
