Currently, the Smithing table is only used to upgrade Diamond to Netherite- but I think this function could be expanded on, in keeping with what we already know about this crafting station.
The Smithing table could be used to modify tools and armors by combining them with different metal types. That is, combining a metal/gemstone block with armor, or a metal ingot/gemstone with a tool to get a modified variant. Using the Smithing table to combine a diamond with a golden axe, for example, would result in a Studded Golden Axe. Using a copper block on an iron chestplate would give you an Alloyed iron chestplate... and so on and so forth.

Copper would generally provide a small increase in durability, Iron an increase in overall efficency/damage/protection, Gold an increase in enchantability, (And the ability to avoid aggravating piglins), diamonds would provide overall boosts, and netherite an enormous increase in durability and fireproofing. These would also affect the name of the item- such as a 'Gilded Netherite Helmet, or a 'Reinforced Diamond Axe,' or even a 'Forged Bow'
