When the Grimstone came out, I thought it was a great idea. I love the feeling of going deeper into the caves and the environment becoming more alien, and also the idea of going higher up the mountain and getting faced with harsh environments
Idea 1: Lower the level that grimstone starts generating to -16 instead of 0, and make the transition smoother. It would look a lot better.
Idea 2: As players go deeper underground, the caves should make all sounds reverb. The reverb would be louder and longer depending on what kind of cave the player is in. Normal caves: low reverb Spaghetti Cave: Medium Reverb and Cheese Caves: Very High Reverb. In underwater caves the reverb is muffled, as all sounds should be underwater.
Idea 3: Hotter Center of the world. As the players go lower, the caves get hotter. The screen blurs, a small red hue appears on light sources, fire lasts longer, magma blocks appear, more lava, magma cubes can rarely spawn, and muffled sounds everywhere. This effect gets stronger as players go lower.
Idea 4: Windy mountains. As players go higher, the mountains get windy and cold. Howling wind is all players would hear, there would be snow everywhere, strays can spawn, and lots of powder snow would encourage people to wear warm armour. Maybe if there is a thunderstorm, a very slight wind would move the player around, but not too much that it's too frustrating. The wind would blow in one direction and would be less effective when the player is surrounded by blocks.
