As it is now the Wandering Trader is a little less than helpful. Every once in a while he may have a plant or seed from a Biome you haven't visited but even that is only useful if you've already visited a village and made a decent amount of trades; early-game players see the Wandering Traders a dozen times before ever even finding a village so all they have left to do is annoy the player. I can't tell you how many countless streamers and Youtuber's I've seen kill the poor guy just to get them to be quiet. They shouldn't exclusively be annoying.
That's why I'm suggesting that they should also be able to buy items from the players for Emeralds. They could be a perfect item sink for unwanted stacks we still keep in our inventories (I'm looking at you Fishing Loot table). Maybe even a stack of 64 Dirt or Cobblestone for an Emerald. Basically common items that Villagers themselves don't even buy, or even some that appear on Villager trades. Give them a reason to be useful other than just to sell random inconsequential items that you won't need from him by the time you have a handful of extra Emeralds anyway, because even in late stages of the game they only sell items that you probably already have or can easily acquire anyway.
Tldr; The Wandering Trader should also buy items from the player for Emeralds as well as selling items, that way he can still be useful early-game and another good way to acquire the rarest of gems.
