The steam engine update is the addition of steam engines to mine craft. I believe this would add a unique element to Minecraft. The reason why I believe steam engines should be added to Minecraft is the need to diversify transportation in Minecraft. The steam engine update should consist of three steam engines one for land, sea and sky.
1.(land) a steam locomotive that can pull multiple minecarts, you could also add the feature of connecting multiple minecarts with a chain. you could use a bucket of water to refill it. as for fuel any thing burnable will do.
2.(sea) A steam boat, there would be three different sizes (small, medium, large) that could hold a certain amount of people and a certain amount of chest's. Small: 5 people, 2 large chest. Medium:10 people, 4 large chest. large: 15 people, 6 large chest. as for fuel anything burnable, and water could be refilled with a bucket.
3.(sky) an air ship, just like the steam boat it would have the three same sizes (small, medium, large). They would also share the same numbers of people who can ride and how many chest can be placed. Small: 5 people, 2 large chest. Medium:10 people, 4 large chest. large: 15 people, 6 large chest. the air ship would also have propellers that can be crafted and attached to the side of the airship. The propellers would be able to move horizontally and vertically. horizontal to move forward vertically to move upward. fuel source would anything burnable. water would be refilled with a bucket.
