With the addition of deepslate and deepslate ores, I can't help but think that the fact that they have very little difference other than the hardness and texture slightly underwhelming. I feel like because deepslate is a much stronger counterpart to stone, found much deeper down, it should require stronger tools to mine. Additionally, this would "nerf" iron pickaxes, which can mine every single overworld ore right now, and iron can be obtained within minutes of starting a new world. Making deepslate diamond, gold and redstone ores require a diamond pickaxe to mine would make diamonds even more sought-after, and make the lower sections of the overworld caves more of a later-game expedition that requires more planning, than it currently is as anyone can go there and collect the bountiful harvest of diamonds there.
Additionally, now with the diamonds being a lot more easy to find, since they're very often found exposed to air in the massive caves, it has become a bit of a commodity, whereas in the past it was a cool sight to find diamond. Requiring you to obtain the first few diamonds to make a diamond pickaxe, before you can obtain the easier diamonds in the deepslate section of the world, would make the game a bit less of a grind after you already find your first diamonds, but it still makes finding the very first diamonds much more special.
