I think that there is a problem with general mob combat. You can kinda cheat to defeat most of the more difficult mobs in the game. Endermen, hoglins, wither skeletons, spiders, and a few more are easily defeated by just digging a 1x2 hole into the nearest hill and hitting them, you can reach them, but they cant reach you.
Considering that the deep dark is definitely going to have some good loot, I think the warden needs a special ability to counteract this. A few ideas come to mind.
The warden could maybe do something with its skulky growths and tether the player to pull you out. Or, the other idea which I personally like better, the warden could use its bulk and strength to chip away at the grimstone when it detects that it can't attack you and there are blocks in the way. Not like a creeper explosion, but it could smack at the blocks every 3 seconds or so and destroy a warden-sized layer of grimstone toward the player. This could be stopped by obsidian, so a deep dark base made of obsidian would be safe.
I think this is necessary just to give the deep dark a bit more of a risk to the reward.
