While playtesting, I've actually found Diamonds and Lapis quite easily.
Lapis has an interesting generation mechanic, but just by finding one exposed ore I had about a stack's worth, enough to enchant 20 items, so I never looked again.
In terms of diamonds, I got 8 from a vein just under the grimstone line, not even minutes after crafting my first iron chestplate. It's not that they're too common, it's that there's too many diamonds per vein. It feels like getting full diamond is still much easier now than before the cave changes.
There are two tweaks I really think the system needs;
- Diamonds and Lapis should have fewer ores per vein. Finding them is a lot of fun, but what isn't fun is having so many so easily that it doesn't make sense to keep exploring the cave you're in.
- Ideally, Diamond veins above Y=-16 should really only contain 1 ore block, with veins below that line containing up to 6 ores. With caves being so much deeper, it doesn't make sense anymore in terms of progression to be able to move up the tech tree so quickly.
