In the most recent snapshot the new grimstone block has been added which serves as an alternative stone that generates at the bottom half of the world. This is a really great change since it communicates to the player how far down they are without them needing to pull up the debug menu. However there's a few issues with the current implementation of grimstone that I'd love to see fixed.
- Currently the hardness of grimstone is higher than that of stone, this makes sense since there's more valuables to find this low underground. However this does a number on the game feel, normal stone has just the right hardness that allows for a haste 2 beacon combined with an efficiency 5 diamond pickaxe to break it instantly, this isn't possible with grimstone though due to its higher hardness. This makes clearing out an underground area much more tedious than before and puts an end to what has been a popular option for gathering resources for so many years.
- Unlike stone, grimstone drops itself instead of cobblestone. I feel like this is a really big missed opportunity since having it drop as cobblestone instead would get around any inventory clutter that gets caused by having another new and very common stone type. Not only that but it feels really inconsistent with how normal stone works.
- Lastly, the texture for grimstone is quite noisy right now which makes the large caverns made up exclusively of this block a bit hard to look at compared to the much more smooth looking stone.
