I'm a huge fan of Archeology IRL, and I think this idea has a lot of potential. I think what's missing (from what we know of anyway) is a way to tie it into the other activities of the game and give it some thematic depth; Archeology in 1.17 needs to be fleshed out.
- Clay shards are a great way to tell a story, but there also really should be a way to decorate pots like we might decorate banners, by adding colors and accents.
- Archeology shouldn't tie into progression (by granting diamond or powerful relics, for instance), but instead give players momentos. One idea is of course a music disc. I think something similar to "Everywhere at the End of the World" would be fitting for the theme of time and forgetting.
- Archeology should tie into rarities, too. I like the idea of there being special plant seeds that can be found, or being even a new "Forget Me Not" flower.
- Excavation sites need to act as interruptions or distractions while doing regular activities. What if there were dig sites hidden under the Nether sea, making it riskier to use TNT for mining Ancient Debris? In that same sense, there should be places to excavate in structures like the Stronghold, and ruins should have some clues from the surface as to where they're buried.
- Finally, the brush also needs to really tie into the base game more than just as an acheological tool. We could use a right-click functionality to pet animals, to de-wax copper, to turn path and farmland blocks to dirt. Etc.
