the Old World is actually a nice stand-alone challenge and Mojang may want to improve upon it.
It has that special "tiny-feel", making the world appear manageable and finite, which - to some - has a certain appeal. Like a classic boardgame, or older RPG's without the huge expanse. There's a sandboxy appearance to having this little square of land to then take and improve upon. I played only Oldworlds, until I needed to enter the Nether to get blaze powder, then I started over with an infinite world (but never stray far from the village I encountered).
I would suggest for Mojang to consider remodelling the Old World into its own challenge (reminescent of Skyblock or Ocean Challenge). The smaller biome size already functions very well, indicative of the "feel" I'm talking about. The absence of caves is also nice to work with (or perhaps at least smaller caves could be an option). To keep with the sandboxy feel, long treks underground should be avoided, focusing instead on mining and utilizing available resources. There would have to be provided for the possibility of more renewable rescources (treasure chests with saplings and seeds, always a village, perhaps some ruins), and perhaps Nether and/or End access. I know I would love this.
