Large caves? Good!
Nether under the Overworld surface? Unappealing
While I like the idea of having larger caves, I can't help but think that Mojang is going a bit overboard with it and missing the point. The caves are a bit too spacious and open. Having large openings like this on occasion is fine, but the sheer size of them, paired with how common they seem to be, is overkill. Large open spaces underground can give a sense of wonder, like how chasms can, but empty space does not equate to content. This needs to be sorted out.
I think the reason most players want bigger caves is because it feels like we've lost the kinds of caves we used to get in alpha and beta minecraft. Cave generation seems like it overlaps in those versions in such a way as to cause larger, more interesting systems, and more commonly. Moreover, the caves seem to connect better, which allows players to explore more before running into dead ends (a constant problem in newer versions, at least in my experience). Often, dead ends even have a small hole in which you can see through into more caves, thus allowing the exploration to easily continue.
Do we really need to be able to fly in the underground with our elytra? Maybe the new biomes, new mobs, etc. will help fill things out, but right now, it's definitely empty and unfinished.
