Amethyst needs another use, one that will want players to mass-farm them. I can honestly see most players seeking out amethyst geodes just to mine calcite. Everything it does right now is obscure at best. On my last post about black light, i noticed that with tinted glass amethyst seemed to invert things. Normal Glass lets in light, but amethyst seemed to invert it.
Bottle of Crystal Dust- Made with Brewing Amethyst Crystals. Inhaling it will reverse all your effects. (weakness to strength, etc) Nothing will happen if the effect does not have an opposite (like jump boost.)
The Splash Bottles can invert effects on other mobs, and enemy players. the only thing you could really do with this in singleplayer is use it on witches, but there is something else too.
Corrupted Beacons- Made with A Beacon, another Nether Star, 5 Tinted Glass, and 2 Crying Obsidian. This Beacon is unique in that it gives you effects like normal beacons, but if you add a 5th, 6th, and 7th layer of Amethyst Blocks to the beacon (515 total Amethyst Blocks) will let you change three different gamerules, which you can toggle by throwing a splash bottle of crystal dust. The 5th layer lets you change the difficulty, the 6th weather, and the 7th you can change it from day to night. Adding more layers of Amethyst (8th, 9th) will increase the radius of all beacon effects. The Beacon is maxed out at 12 total layers (2,760 Amethyst Blocks + 164 Mineral Blocks.) That's a lot of Amethyst to Farm! (11,040 Crystals)
