With the new cave update we see a change in height limit, and more cave space. This is awesome. However, the y coordinate does not make a lot of sense right now. It would be awesome if we could have the y coordinate be 0 for the sea level.
Not only it would make most y values shorter when building (for example, making a 5 block high house at y=0 would mean the top block would be at y=5);
but also most caves would be at negative values which would make a lot of sense, and it would make it easier to talk about depth. Bigger number? means deeper. Diamonds at depth 64, means we would have to dig 64 blocks to find diamonds. Redstone starts at depth 32, again, much simpler to explain. Just dig 32 blocks.
Additionally, for custom dimensions, it would be much easier to think about coordinates. The surface is always at y=0. Independently from the height of the custom dimension. Possibly you could even change the max and min value. Want a cave world? Just set the y to [-256,0]. For a skyblock, maybe [256,512] for example.
Overall i think it would just be a better Y coordinate system, and more expandable too.
