Coal should be removed because it promotes fossil fuel use and there are many alternatives, including Charcoal that is now obtainable (in 21w05a) using logs. We also have diamonds, which as you know, is just a denser and older variety of coal. With torches being somewhat harder to obtain while caving, making lichen more prevalent could make it easier. Otherwise make candles cheaper and/or change the crafting recipe of lanterns to use candles.
