I think this is needed so players can know there has been a fire. When I first started playing, I came back from a long mining trip to most of my house gone. Since I had a chunk load error earlier I assumed it was a glitch. Only a web search told me my house had been struck by lightening. Having some dropped burnt blocks of some sort would provide evidence to the player in game of what might have happened. I'm not the only new player to have assumed it was a problem with the game. Having it be a chance means only a few charred blocks of some sort will be left behind as evidence.
Since the caves and cliffs update will have a lightening rod this seems the perfect time to add a block drop from wood blocks burning so players can know in game what is happening, instead of leaving their game to search the web. The only way to know now what happened to your build is if you see the fire but this wont happen if away or mining.
