Rising Lava

I know this is a bit of a stretch, but I would love to see a way of knowing the day night cycle in the nether without a clock, and my idea of how it could work would even bring more use to the clock.  At nighttime I would like to see the lava rise so many blocks, which could even vary, each night as if it were a cycle 3, 5, 7, 10, 7, 5, 3, and repeat.  Like I said this would be a bit of a stretch, but I feel this would ad a lot more danger and fun to the nether, as well as bringing more attention to older items.

    This would be interesting, but it would cause an unheard of amount of lag. Substitutes for this could include the particles in the air changing saturation based on time of day, or the colour of striders, or maybe even the colour of crying obsidian. :D
