I wish Mojang would improve minecraft's weather model... wait a sec, caves and cliffs! Mountains commonly have a major impact on weather patterns and effects. When I was in the mountains, I noticed—and was told clearly—that you should never be in the open during a thunderstorm, this is due to the fact that any and every object has a certainty to contain ions in them that can be released if a powerful enough electric field is close to it: When you are on a high place during a thunderstorm, even by just a little bit, you are closer to the ions high in the atmosphere. So if a lighting rod was placed at the base of a cliff, the bolt would be more likely to arc onto the peak of the cliff instead of the rod; electricity is by no means attracted to metal.
