Currently, there aren't many apex predators in the game other than foxes and polar bears, so perhaps the addition of the game's first big cat could catch the attention of many people.
Pumas could spawn in extreme hills, plains, taigas, and mesa biomes however. However, pumas would be a lot rarer than most other mobs, being nearly twice as rare as ocelots. They can be tamed with cod or mutton and will follow and protect the player once tamed. However, it will not run or teleport when following the player, so there may be a good chance it gets lost of the owner doesn't wait for the it.
Unlike other cats, pumas can't scare creepers. Instead, they hunt down and kill any nearby monsters with the exception of endermen, which it will not defend the player from. If the puma is low on health, it will sprint away from its offender and wait to get healed by its owner.
If within the presence of 2 or more wolves or a polar bear, the puma will emit a growl and quickly sprint away. It will stalk and kill lone wolves if it gets the chance.
Pumas could have 12 health when wild, and 24 health when tamed. and could deal 3 and 1/2 attack in easy, 4 and 1/2 attack in normal mode, and 6 and 1/2 attack in hard mode.
Wild Pumas will stalk and kill foxes, lone wolves, sheep, goats, llamas, chickens, and rabbits, similarly to ocelots attacking chickens and turtles.
