Problem: In regular gameplay, there is barely any if none extrinsic motivation for making roads, walls, detailed buildings or any sort of exercise in creativity or infrastructure that isn't fully deliberate.
A possible solution: Make tiles ingame become more than the sum of their parts; Block interactions are a way of implementing simple improvements to gameplay without any punishments for avoiding this system.
What it is: On a block update basis, 'manufactured' blocks (planks, cobble, bricks, glass) will check their surroundings to see if they have a foundation block (A more resilient or blast proof block). If one is found in contact with the bottom of a wall block within a column of same material, or immediately behind the direction a player is interacting from, the block being broken will inherit the resistance from the foundation.

If walked on, 'grounded blocks' will also give the player a 1.25x speed bonus.
Example: If a player goes through the hassle of making an obsidian foundation for their house/wall, the structure would become more durable and more blast resistant.
Goal: The idea is not to punish a certain building style, but to reward players for working around these simple rules for making more resilient structures and to develop infrastructure like cities and roads, all while having them safer from ill-intended players.
