The corrupted cauldron boss fight is very lackluster and badly designed for the first boss you'll encounter in the game. Let's fix that:
Stage 1: The corrupted cauldron will start out spawning normal mobs (at a much lower rate). It will periodically shoot poison clouds at you if you're far away, but there's nothing surrounding it so if you take down the mobs, you should be able to take it on with melee attacks.
Stage 2: The corrupted cauldron will create an explosion above it to knock you away, then it will bubble up and surround itself in a large poison cloud (instead of purple fire). It will then erupt many poison clouds which will fall from the sky, and when they land, it will summon corrupted slimes. This is the corrupted cauldron's most powerful attack, but it will remove the cauldron's poisonous aura, leaving it vulnerable. Take care of the corrupted slimes, then attack it before it regains its poisonous aura and summons corrupted slimes again.
Stage 3: The corrupted cauldron will become highly damaged, and a large hole will appear in front of it with the face of a large corrupted slime. The cauldron will then bounce around the map and shoot large corrupted slime projectiles. Periodically, the cauldron will tilt towards you and spill poison clouds towards you, which you can dodge by rolling away. You may use melee attacks while in this final stage, but ranged attacks are recommended.
