In the new recently updated combat update with the stackable potions, melee weapon range and attack speed, and food animation getting cancelled upon hit, it encourages a more diverse combat. But in a pvp battle, any player would pretty much prefer using a shield rather than a totem, which can only be used once and will not stack.
My suggestion is using the totem of undying as a recipe for more advanced totems.
1. Totem of Archery
2. Totem of Cleansing
3. Totem of Repair
4. Totem of Safekeeping
5. Totem of Explosion
(The names and crafting recipe can be changed) all of these totems can only be used once and gets destroyed.
1.Totem of Archery
*ToU+4 bow +1 blindness potion
Use: When a player holding this totem is hit by a projectile, the player who shot it will get blinded and slowed for 3 sec.
This will greatly help for escaping.
2.Totem of Cleansing
*ToU+ 4 milk+1 ghast tear
Use: when you get affected by a debuff caused by potions, it will immediately get removed.
3. Totem of Repair is crafted using:
*Totem of undying+4 diamond+1 mending book
Use: If an item you are wearing or using gets destroyed, it will immediately be repaired with 25% durability.
4. Totem of Safekeeping is crafted using:
*ToU+4 chest+1 Eye of ender
Use: If you die, you will revive with about 4-7 random items you had in your inventory.
5. Totem of Explosion is crafted using:
*ToU+4 Tnt+1 coal
Use: if you die, it will cause an explosion to the area where you died.
