For almost every wooden block or item in Minecraft, there are variants for each wood type. There are 8 different wooden stairs, one for each wood type, as well as 8 different signs, 8 different doors, etc. But there aren't 8 different sticks, and I understand why. Having lots of different types of sticks cluttering up your chests would be annoying, and would not benefit the game overall. However, I propose a couple of ways that this could be implemented.
First of all, these sticks could be used to make tools a little more customizable, without having to add entire new tiers of tools. A tool's "handle" would look like whatever stick was used, and the "head" would look like whatever wood type, or even stone type, was used.
For example, if you crafted a stone pickaxe with 3 granite and 2 birch sticks, it would appear as a reddish pickaxe with a lighter handle. This would not only allow players to have a more personalized array of tools, but would also make the early game feel different depending on the biome you live in. Also, just to clarify, I do not think that a tool's statistics (speed, durability, damage) should change depending on what was used to make it.
Other items could be implemented using these sticks, including more ladders, item frames, armor stands, bows and crossbows, and even fishing rods.
On a side note, I also think that there could be a unique stick for bamboo, maybe green or even greenish yellow, like dead bamboo? And maybe also a new stick for a dead bush.
