Adding more arachnids, and adding back an old texture?

Minecraft doesn’t have many arthropods at the moment, and all are fairly weak and puts the bane of arthropods enchantment at waste.

Adding these new mobs would fix that, and also give more challenge.

    Starting with Scorpions. Like spiders, and all mobs in this post, they are hostile only in the dark, are arachnids and can climb walls. They have 2 variants.

    The desert scorpion spawns in, as the name suggests, deserts and perhaps Badlands, during the night. They have a sandy texture to somewhat blend in with their surroundings. There is a 1 in 5 chance of every spider which spawns in a desert to be replaced with a scorpion. Occasionally you can find a burrow structure which spawns up to 2 scorpions inside. A scorpion is slightly larger than a spider in terms of size, therefore resulting in more health.

    A scorpion has 32 hp (16 hearts), which is twice the amount of a regular spider. When hostile they will recoil in position and show that they are ready to pursue, before approaching the target at a moderate pace and starting to attack. They will lash out with their stinger, which has long reach, and will deal 1 heart of damage and give poison to their victim for 7 seconds. There is a 15 second cooldown to this before they can use their stinger again. In between these attacks, the scorpion will use their claws to deal damage, and will also have an animation for this too, with the pincers opening and closing. Unlike spiders, they won’t leap at the target as they attack. The pincers deal 4 damage (2 hearts) in normal mode, and are their main form of attack. In terms of drops, I am not yet sure about any which are vanilla enough at the moment. Perhaps something you crush into a powder and use for brewing?

    As I said, there are 2 variants. The other one spawns in jungles, by the name of the jungle/tropical scorpion. Although it is smaller in size, it is also faster, harder to hit and gives you 18 seconds of poison, much more compared to 5. It has noticeably less strength to make up for that, however, with 12 hp (6 hearts) of health and an attack strength of 2 (1 heart), for its pincers. Keep in mind that its stinger-attack cooldown is only 4.5 seconds, meaning that it can continuously inject venom into you, even if you are still being poisoned.

    As a side-feature. I thought of a cool and fun behaviour mechanic I would love to see, that is the announced meerkats from the biome-vote to actively hunt down and kill scorpions if they get too close. This will make meerkats more useful (when they eventually get added) to the player and mimic real life meerkats eating scorpions. In the game, the poor scorpion will be passive to the player as it helplessly attempts to flee from getting continuously bombarded by a group of hungry critters devouring the beast. It is a similar scenario to a cat and creeper, or wolf and skeleton.

    The other section of my post is all about the mother/brood spider and baby spider/spiderling.

    The spiderling is basically a small, cute and irritating baby version of the common spider. It is obviously much smaller, probably slightly bigger than a silverfish. It is lighter in colour, coming in fuzzy, light hazel/tan or soft grey. They also have 4 eyes instead of 8. Overtime it can grow into a spider (I’m not too sure about that feature though). It has 8 hp (4 hearts), which is half the health of a spider, and has the attack strength of 2 hp (1 heart). It is speedy, has a small hitbox, can fit through very, very tight spaces and will even climb and jump at you to attack you? It will be very annoying to deal with.

    How does it spawn? 5% of adult spiders spawn as spiderlings. You can also find a new entity/block which is a spider nest. It is made out of spider silk, is the size of a chest (so not a full block) and you can find it throughout your world, preferably in caves. The nests spawn together in groups of 1-3, and will be similar to mob spawners, except they do not have a structure. Spiderlings will continuously pop out and up to 7 will spawn before the nest will disappear. The nest has an animation of it slightly moving, pulsating and wriggling about, as though the nest is full of spiders scuttling around. If you break the nest, it will drop what it was made out of – string. However, you may also rarely find other things which may have been caught up and entangled in the nest; nothing crazy like diamonds and equipment, but the occasional stick, iron nugget, spider eye and emerald. However, be warned! If you break the nest, all of the spiderlings will come spilling out at once. You can also shear the nest and it will drop as an item with all the spiderlings still inside, similar to bees and hives (I’m still not sure whether or not silk-touch will be needed). Then you will get an advancement/achievement similar to ‘total beelocation’ except for spiderlings.

    The mother/broody/brood (I think brood) is what you could call a creepy-crawly miniboss. It is much larger than a spider, and in terms of coloration, I think a terrifying jet-black darker than night, with white gleams representing it is shiny and sleek, with all the hair perfectly lined. Sometimes you may even find a couple of spiderlings clinging onto its back. It may seem cute, but means bad news for a player. It has large, glowing red eyes with a tinge of purple, all etched onto its face, above large, sharp mandibles dripping sickly green poison. It prefers to scuttle about in the dark caverns of the underground. If it somehow finds itself on the surface, it will become neutral to the player if it is bright enough, or if someone has been placing too many torches underground. When on the surface, it will try to go beneath sea-level again, where it rarely spawns. Perhaps it could spawn specifically in a biome in the Caves & Cliffs update?

    Brood spiders will make their way towards any player who happens to venture too near, ensuring it is dark enough. The spider has 50 hp (25 hearts), which is more than twice the health of an unarmoured player. Like all spiders, it will leap onto the player, dealing 8 hp (4 hearts) of damage, followed by 3.75 seconds of FATAL poison. While the poison will take away only 3 hp (1.5 hearts), it has the power to kill, similar to wither. Currently the only way fatal poison is in the game is when you feed a parrot a cookie in bedrock edition. The brood-spider will also have 60% knock-back resistance, making it even harder to defeat. Furthermore, as it fights, it may place nests as it goes, which spiderlings will hatch out of and aid their mummy. Just to balance things out, the nests only contain 4 spiderlings instead of 7. The nest is also slightly smaller than usual. As a side-note, imagine what a pain it would be if a skeleton was riding it. Upon death, similarly to the scorpions, I’m still not entirely sure what it would drop, except for usual spider drops, a hefty 20 experience orbs and perhaps more string than usual (5 instead of 0-2).

    I hope you liked my ideas and I appreciate that you took the time to read this. I apologize if this post was too long, as I tried to add as much detail possible. I think I did a fairly good job of balancing this out, but will definitely make changes if I haven’t done a good-enough job. I will try to listen to any feed-back and it will all help :D. I am considering baby scorpions and brood scorpions too, although that probably won’t happen. But I would love to see all of this added to Caves & Cliffs, or at least the spiders, as they are all linked to the underground.

    And this would be a small feature, but… can the old brown texture of the spider with black eyes spawn in deserts? Or other biomes that would match.

    another cool mechanic could be that brood spiders can shoot webs at you, similarly to spiders in minecraft dungeons. Maybe spiders in hard mode will do the same? (btw, spider nests will slow an entity down, similarly to cobwebs).

    when brood spiders are killed, any spiderling riders drop off and attack
