The phantom is an annoying mob period. First off, they punish the player for not choosing to make the game easier by sleeping. Sleep is also often not an option especially on crowded servers. As for the phantom's actual mechanics, they are slow, incredibly loud, and more of an annoyance than a threat. The player will receive a hoard of phantoms and multiple hoards within a single night which is very distracting from any work the player would be doing.
Minecraft is generally a peaceful and relaxing game where the challenges come from the player seeking them out. Finally, the phantom goes against the lore the Minecraft. The player can mine a mountain with just food and a pickaxe but should they go a night or two without sleep they are prone to insanity through phantoms.
The player is strong and should be able to brave the night once more without the annoyance of the phantom which is comparable more so to a housefly than a threat.
