The volcanic ash in basalt deltas is a beautiful effect -- but maybe it can be a bit more than that. I suggest that cauldrons, when placed in basalt delta biomes, will generate ash over time if they aren't being filled by pointed dripstone already.
The ash can then be collected in a bucket, and perhaps be used similarly to powdered snow, without the freezing effect, and with black particles and fog. Similarly to powdered snow, it would extinguish players on fire.
Ash is used as an abrasive in the real world -- perhaps crafting tarnished copper blocks with a bucket of ash could restore them to a less tarnished state and remove any waxing on the block.
