Minecraft needs different colored light sources. I know colored light doesn't exist in Minecraft as of the current version, so actual light color won't change but the block itself will, (think of this similar to blue fire).
Tinted glass was released in snapshot 20w45a, which brought us a new way to mess around with lighting. What if we took this a step further, and make use of some of the lesser used mechanics?
A good way to do this, is to introduce Crystal Blocks, craftable with amethyst, but different from the block of amethyst. It would emit a low light level, but the more there are next to each other, the higher the light level. It wouldn't look like stained or tinted glass, but it wouldn't be opaque either. Putting a different light source within 2 blocks of it causes it to no longer emit light. When in this state, all light passing through the block will be dimmed by 20%, allowing you to manipulate any light source to create different effects. You can use dye to change the color. The block will have an animation which is more visible at higher light levels, and a small amount of particles will appear when the light level of the block is 10 or higher.
It can be crafted using an amethyst cluster (requiring silk touch) in the center, and 8 tinted glass around it, giving you 2 crystal blocks. The default color is purple, but can be stained with dye.
