Amethyst use in Redstone

Amethyst is a crystalline material. Crystalline materials are used in electricity in the actual world as piezoelectricity. Piezoelectricity, according to Wikipedia, is "the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid materials such as crystals, in response to applied mechanical stress."

There should be a redstone counterpart of this real-world mechanic. However, how it would be executed is the problem.

Thoughts?

    Redstone current only flows through an amethyst block while you are mining it. Or perhaps it could stop flowing when you mine it...

    I know its not realistic and does not entirely make sense but what if it slowly builds up a charge and then discharges that signal. so when redstone is connected to the amethyst every 20 ticks the redstone signal strength is added until the amethysts charge is 30 which then releases a redstone pulse of 30.

    it would be useful for making timers and counters and maybe compariters outputs whatever signal strength the device is currently on.

    once one of my lighters broke, so i took the piezoelectric spark thingy out of it,

    i wanted to see what it felt like when i zapped myself with it, and it hurt.

    so maybe it could be turned into a weapon of some kind.

    like maybe if you put a bow and an amethyst shard in a crafting table, it could make some kind of short range zapping weapon
