PvP can be a lot more with a spear added to it ( it can be difficult to obtain a trident in multiplayer games like UHCs, etc), it can be like an axe, a sword, etc, and be made out of multiple materials like wood, iron, etc. It can be crafted with the sticks and main material (ingots and such) to be placed diagonally in a crafting bench to prevent clash with the crafting recipe of a shovel. Its main importance in PvP/PvE could be that its reach is more than the normal 4-5 blocks which is normal and can be around 6-7 blocks (or this could be an enchantment unique to spears and tridents called "reach I/II/III"), however, it does not knock the player/mob backwards so that the swords and axes are still viable. Its attack damage can be lesser than that of a sword (eg: diamond spear deals 6 damage or so) with a hit speed somewhere between the sword and axe. The shield can also maybe be ineffective against it. It can also have the same throwing mechanic and enchantments as a trident but not certain enchantments such as loyalty, channelling and riptide since the trident is still considered to be more "magical" than a spear. The spear can also have lower durability than a trident to make the trident more viable during survival mode and since making a spear only requires 1 piece of its main material like the netherite, diamond, etc. I also hope that a new enchantment can be added called "Quick travel I/II/III" that can increase the speed at which a trident or spear moves at when thrown.
